With the current course, I’ve been switching plugin for my Wordpress website, going from Google Site Kit to GTM4WP. It’s a bit more advanced, but I’m starting to see why pros prefer it, and why it might completely change how I track and understand my site’s data.

GTM4WP vs. Site Kit: Feature Comparison Table

1. GTM4WP teaches real tagging workflows

Site Kit is beginner-friendly, but it hides most of what’s happening under the hood.

GTM4WP integrates directly with Google Tag Manager, which is how tagging is done in most professional marketing, analytics, and SEO environments.
My teacher likely wants us to learn:

  • how tags fire
  • what triggers and variables are
  • event tracking
  • data layer usage
  • debugging tag issues
  • building scalable tracking setups

These are essential skills Site Kit does not teach.

2. GTM4WP gives far more control

GTM4WP provides native support for:

  • Enhanced Ecommerce data layer pushes
  • form submission tracking
  • scroll tracking
  • user engagement events
  • login / registration tracking
  • custom events
  • WooCommerce tracking

Site Kit cannot match this level of customization.

Since the course involves analytics, marketing tags, or ecommerce tracking, then GTM4WP is the correct tool.

3. Site Kit can be too limited or unreliable for advanced analytics

Site Kit is fine for installing:

  • GA4
  • Search Console
  • AdSense

…but it has limitations:

  • It does not integrate well with advanced GA4 event setups
  • It can override or conflict with manual GTM configurations
  • Its tracking sometimes lags behind best practices
  • Google updates it far less aggressively than GTM itself

Professionals usually replace Site Kit with GTM as soon as they need anything beyond basic tracking.

4. GTM is the industry standard

Since the class is focused on:

  • digital marketing
  • analytics
  • performance tracking
  • ecommerce
  • tag deployment

…then us students must learn Google Tag Manager, because it’s what real companies and agencies use.

Site Kit is essentially a convenience tool for casual site owners.

5. GTM4WP teaches about the data layer

Understanding the dataLayer is crucial for:

  • Enhanced ecommerce
  • custom GA4 events
  • marketing pixels (Meta, TikTok, Pinterest)
  • conversion optimization
  • advertising attribution

Site Kit does not expose these concepts.

TL;DR

My teacher wants us to use GTM4WP because:

✔️ It’s a professional-grade tool

✔️ It gives more control over tracking

✔️ It works with the data layer

✔️ It’s required for advanced GA4 and marketing setups

✔️ It prepares us for real-world analytics work

✖️ Site Kit is too limited for serious analytics

Conclusion

If I want to learn digital analytics, marketing tracking, or advanced GA4 setups, GTM4WP is essential. Site Kit is fine for beginners, but it hides the mechanics professionals need to understand.
